UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore forward Corey Hertzog (Reading, Pa.) has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. With the honor, Hertzog becomes the second Nittany Lion to be recognized this season after senior forward Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) won on Sept. 7.
For Hertzog, the league award is the second of his career. He earned his first a year ago after scoring the first two goals of his collegiate career in a 3-2 victory over Ohio State.
Hertzog opened the week by scoring Penn State's lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Lehigh on Wednesday evening at Jeffrey Field. On Sunday, he followed up by netting his third game winning goal of the season in the Nittany Lions' 2-0 Big Ten season opening victory over No. 22 Michigan.
Hertzog has posted at least one point in five of nine games this season and Penn State is 4-0-1 in games in which Hertzog notches either a goal or an assist. He currently tops the Nittany Lions in goals with five and is tied with Yeisley for the team lead in points with 12. Hertzog is also tied for third in the Big Ten in goals and tied with Yeisley for fourth in the conference in points.
The Nittany Lions will wrap up their three-game home stand on Wed., Sept. 30 when Penn (3-2-2) visits Jeffrey Field for a 7 p.m. contest. Penn State holds a 19-6-3 series record versus the Quakers. In the teams' last meeting in University Park, in 2007, the Lions came away 3-2 victors.
