Penn State's Redden, Murphy and Schrom Excel At Myrtle Beach Southeast Regional Wheelchair Games

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 20, 2009 - Penn State Ability Athletes returned to action in grand fashion at the Myrtle Beach Southeast Regional Wheelchair Games in South Carolina April 17-18.

Nittany Lions Rohan Murphy, Maggie Redden and Jake Schrom all won their respective vents in impressive fashion.

Murphy lifted 350 pounds to break his own American powerlifting record in the 126-pound category. Murphy also won the field 56 discus competition with a throw of 20.67 meters and the javelin with a toss of 17.12 meters. Michael McHugh also competing in field 56 threw 3.84 meters in the shot put, 11.32 in the disc, and 10.85 in the javelin.

Maggie Redden continued her winning ways on the track in her first race since Bejjing, Paralympics. Redden won all three of her events of wheelchair racing. She claimed the 100-meter title in 18.42, the 200-meter title in 35.72, and the 400-meter race in 70.69.

In his first ever throwing competition, Schrom set a national record with a throw of 7.44 meters in the shot put in the field 58 category. He also won the discus with a toss of 23.26 meters and the javelin with a toss of 18.78 meters. An above the knee amputee, Schrom also took second overall in his first-ever lifting competition posting a mark of 315 pounds.
