Toney Garners Philly Soccer News Player of the Year Award

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--A week after having five Nittany Lions named to the Philly Soccer News Best XI, one of those five honorees was named women's player of the year by the news outlet. Danielle Toney (Northville, Mich.) was named the 2009 Women's Player of the Year on Wednesday morning.

Toney, a First Team All-Big Ten selection, was second on the team in goals (13) and points (32) leading a potent offense that captured the Nittany Lions' 12th straight Big Ten Championship. Toney also added a career-high six assists to go along with four game-winning goals this season.

Toney was twice named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week as well as garnering Soccer America Team of the Week and TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Week accolades during her career season.

The Northville, Mich. native was also named to the NSCAA All-Great Lakes First Team this season, her second-straight All-Region honor. Toney will be the team's leading return scoring threat for the 2010 season along with fellow First Team All-Big Ten and All-Great Lakes honoree Christine Nairn (Bowie, Md.).

The Penn State women's soccer team saw five of its own named to the Philly Soccer News Best XI presented by the Philadelphia Independence on last week. The Nittany Lions had the most representatives on the squad.

Freshman defender Lexi Marton (Aurora, Ontario), senior goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher (Seymour, Conn.), senior forward Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.), Nairn and Toney garnered spots on the Best XI.

Naeher, Nairn and Schoepfer wrapped up a training camp with the U.S. National and U-23 Teams in Carson, Calif. earlier this month while the seniors awaiting the 2010 Women's Professional Soccer draft on Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. Naeher and Schoepfer will be honored as part of the NSCAA Convention at the All-America Luncheon to be held Jan. 16, 2010 in Philadelphia.
