Personett Wins All-Around in Setback to Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 14th-ranked Penn State women's gymnastics team suffered a setback to Big Ten foe Ohio State on Saturday afternoon. The Buckeyes won the dual meet with a score of 194.950, while the Nittany Lions totaled 193.850.

Penn State scored a 49.275 on vault, a 48.075 on the uneven bars, a 47.875 on beam and a 48.625 on floor. Ohio State finished the meet with a 49.000 on vault, a 48.500 on bars, a 48.625 on beam and a 48.825 on floor.

Senior Brandi Personett (Katy, Texas) won her sixth all-around title of the season after scoring a 39.400 to take top honors. Freshman Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) competed in the all-around for the second time this season and took second with a 39.150. Freshman Madison Merriam (Gaithersburg, Md.) made her all-around debut finishing sixth with a 37.900.

The Nittany Lions opened the meet on bars. Merriam won her first individual event title with a 9.775. Sophomore Natalie Ettl (Waukesha, Wis.) tied for second with two OSU gymnasts scoring a 9.750, Personett placed fifth with a 9.700. Musser placed seventh with a 9.675 and sophomore Whitney Bencsko (Pompton Plains, N.J.) and Alexandra Brockway (Macungie, Pa.) tied for 11th with a 9.175.

Penn State moved on to vault in the second rotation where Musser tied with Personett for top honors on the event with a 9.900. Merriam placed third with a personal-best 9.850. Senior Rosie Smith (Waterford, Pa.) tied four fourth with a 9.825 and senior Casey Rohrbaugh (Spring Grove, Pa.) took seventh with a 9.800.

Personett, who had won floor in every meet this season, once again placed first in the event with a 9.925. Smith was Penn State's next top competitor taking fourth with a 9.775. Rohrbaugh finished sixth with a 9.750, Musser tied for eighth with a 9.700 and senior Allie Southard (Nanuet, N.Y.) placed 11th scoring a 9.475.

The Nittany Lions closed out the meet on beam, where Musser took home her second title on the event. She tied with Personett with a 9.875 for first place. Rohrbaugh placed sixth on beam with a 9.675, while Southard and sophomore Daryl Konsevick (Rutherford, N.J.) tied for ninth scoring a 9.225.

The Nittany Lions are back in action on Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m. Penn State hosts Bridgeport, Maryland and Michigan in a quad meet in Rec Hall.
