March 3, 2010
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Coming off of a 16th place finish at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue, the Nittany Lions will look to rebound at the seventh Rio Verde Collegiate in Arizona, hosted by Western Michigan. This will be Penn State's first time participating in this tournament.
"The field is competitive, along with two of our conference teams to contend with (Michigan and Minnesota)," head coach Denise St. Pierre said. "We are confident that we have made good preparations to have a successful tournament."
The Nittany Lions are led by freshman Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio), who averages 77.0 strokes-per-round. Junior Gia Fanelli (West Palm Beach, Fla.) follows with her average of 79.2 and will also start for Penn State.
Freshmen Jamie Lavin (Deerfield, Ill.) and Hanule Seo (St. Louis, Mo.) will also be in the starting lineup along with junior Giulia Carando (Torino, Italy). The rest of the Nittany Lions will make the trip and compete as individuals.
The field will consist of 18 teams; with Minnesota, Michigan and the defending tournament champion Kansas as the top teams. Kansas' Meghan Gockel also returns as the tournament's defending individual champion.
The tournament will consist of three rounds in Rio Verde, Ariz., and will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 5, 6 and 7.
