BAKU, Azerbaijan - After winning the National Championships two weeks ago, freshman David Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) can add a bronze and gold medal to his collection.
Willette was part of the U.S. men's foil team that came in first place at the Junior World Championships. He also won the bronze in the individual foil contest. The competition began on April 2 and concluded on April 10.
Coach Emmanuil Kaidanov said that Willette was very instrumental in helping the team in the championships and also on an individual level.
"Individually, that was [Penn State's] best performance of our foilists ever," Kaidanov said.
Sophomore Aleksander Ochocki (Clark, N.J.) was also a part of the action, helping the U.S. men's saber team win the bronze medal. Kaidanov said that Ochocki performed very strongly as well.
Two years ago, senior Nick Chinman (Boulder, Colo.) was part of the USA men's foil team that won the gold at the Junior World Championships, and last year sophomore Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) helped the foil team win the silver.
Coach said he was proud that three different Penn State fencers have won a medal and was glad to return the gold this year.
