COLUMBUS, Ohio: April 30, 2010 - Junior Karlee McQuillen (Johnstown, Pa.) recorded her second javelin victory in as many weeks, Friday at the Jesse Owens Classic on the campus of Ohio State University. Another pair of Nittany Lions recorded top five finishes in a windy opening day of competition, including freshman Nicole Lord (Media, Pa.) in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, and sophomore Duri Greene (Wyndmoor, Pa.) in the men's javelin.
McQuillen, who earned a victory at Penn Relays a week ago, turned in a top toss of 156-09 (47.79), to better Ohio State's Maggie Mullen in second by just a single inch. McQuillen's effort was also a new meet record, topping Megan Sprenerbach of Washington, who threw 155-10 (47.49) in 2001. On the men's side, Greene took fourth overall with a season-best mark of 196-09 (57.98) - the fifth-best performance in the Big Ten this season.
Also in the field, senior Caitlin Fairbairn (Coatesville, Pa.) recorded a 10th-place finish in the women's pole vault despite windy conditions, clearing 12-01.50 (3.70) to match her own season best.
On the track, Lord led the way with a fifth-place finish in the steeplechase, breaking the tape at 10:40.93 - a new lifetime best, and the sixth-fastest effort among Big Ten competitors this season. Classmate Natalie Bower (Pleasant Unity, Pa.) also registered a top 10 standing, placing seventh in 10:46.45, also a new personal record.
Action at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium continues on Saturday morning. The Nittany Lions will also be in action on the West Coast on Saturday, with the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford set for Saturday evening.
