UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Six Penn State field hockey players have been named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for the 2009-10 academic year, as announced by the conference office on Thursday. They are among 484 total honorees and 57 from Penn State.

Receiving the distinction were Gina Bartolacci (Washington Crossing, Pa.), Amy Bonenberger (Palmyra, Pa.), Bethany Marvel (Newtown, Pa.), Ali Meves (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.), Jenny Purvis (Maple Glen, Pa.) and Daneen Zug (Manheim, Pa.). Bartolacci, Bonenberger, Marvel and Meves are all second-time winners after being among last year's inaugural recipients.

The award honors student-athletes who earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher during the previous academic year. Penn State's 57 total honorees are second most in the Big Ten while field hockey's six are second among all sports at Penn State.

The academic laurels were numerous for the Nittany Lions in 2009-10. Meves and Zug were voted into the prestigious Spiritus Leoninus Honor Society in the spring, Bonenberger was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District Second Team, twelve were named Academic All-Big Ten and nine to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
