Stolberg Named Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Services

Jan. 19, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; - Penn State Director of Athletics Tim Curley today announced the hiring of Matthew Stolberg as Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Services. Stolberg will begin his Penn State duties January 25 after serving the University of Michigan the past nine years.

Former Penn State compliance director John Bove retired from the University in late in 2009 after 30 years in the athletic department, including positions with football and in athletic administration.

"We are pleased to announce the addition of Matt Stolberg to our department as our new Associate Athletic Director of Compliance and Student-Athlete Services," said Curley. "Filling the void when long-time Penn State Director of Compliance John Bove retired was difficult, but we think Matt is highly qualified to serve in this role and continue our strong tradition in this critical area. His past experience, as well as his familiarity with the Big Ten, were all positives for us during our search. We are proud to say this Wolverine is now a Nittany Lion."

Among Stolberg's Penn State responsibilities will be overseeing the integration of Student-Athlete Services within the compliance operation. Student-Athlete Services, which handles a variety of compliance-related tasks under the direction of Assistant Athletic Director Bruce Ellis, will become part of the compliance operation. The integration of Student-Athlete Services expands the compliance staff and better aligns the overall compliance effort within Intercollegiate Athletics.

Stolberg served as Michigan's Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance since 2001, coordinating eligibility certification for the school's 800 student-athletes in 25 sports. In addition to those duties, Stolberg managed incoming student-athletes, outgoing transfers and directed rules education programming for coaches and staff.

"Penn State's commitment to intercollegiate athletics goes far beyond wins and losses, and that is what makes it so special," said Stolberg. "It is an honor to be invited into the Nittany Lion family and I look forward to serving the entire University community."

Stolberg's responsibilities in the compliance department at Michigan saw him coordinate the complete review and adjustments for the NCAA APR Report, investigate and report violations of Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules, while also preparing all NCAA and Big Ten petition and waiver requests. Other duties Stolberg oversaw were UM's Sports Agent Registration and Education Program and serving as Primary Athletics Liaison to the Registrar's Office.

Prior to Stolberg's arrival in Ann Arbor, he served as assistant compliance coordinator at Michigan State University, compliance coordinator at Northwestern University and coordinator of administrative services at St. Bonaventure University. At Michigan State, Stolberg oversaw all compliance monitoring systems including recruiting, coaching limitations, promotional activities, playing and practice seasons and athletically related outside income. He had a similar role at Northwestern.

Stolberg received his B.S. in business administration for marketing at Duquesne University. He moved on to Georgia Southern University to earn his Master's in kinesiology and sports management, earning Honors Graduate accolades. Stolberg is originally from Cuba, N.Y.

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics is self-supporting, sponsors 29 sports (15 men's and 14 women's) and is one of the nation's most successful, broad-based athletic departments.
