Swimming & Diving Cruises to Victory over West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Penn State women's swimming & diving team cruised to a 174-67 victory over West Virginia during the Nittany Lions' first action of the season on Saturday afternoon at the WVU Natatorium.

Sophomore sensation Amy Modglin led the Nittany Lions after capturing three events, including two individual disciplines. During the meet, she took the top spot in the 400-IM in 4:22.02 before returning to win the 200-backstroke in 1:58.62. In the first event of the meet, she also joined forces with Merritt Krawczyk, Alex Young, and Hailey Campbell to win the 400-medley relay in 3:48.14.

Krawczyk, Young, and Campbell all returned to the pool to win individual titles as well. Krawczyk took the title in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:19.74, while Campbell touched the wall first in the 100-freestyle after finishing in 52.75. Young rounded out the group with a victory in the 200-fly after capturing the event in 2:01.16.

Paige Whitmire also had an outstanding day in the pool as she posted a pair of first-place finishes. On an individual level, she sped to the title in the 50-freestyle with a time of 23.70. Later, she capped off the competition after teaming with Kristen Rodman, Katie Pulos, and Erin Thomas to win the 400-freestyle relay with a clocking of 3:29.48.

The Nittany Lions also dominated the diving events as the squad took the top four spots in both disciplines. Senior Megan Marco recorded the top score in the 1-meter board with a 237.30. Meg Alderman won the 3-meter dive after scoring a 227.92. Ilana Zeises and Katie O'Connell finished in the top-three in both events as well.

Co-captain Lauren Smart also looked strong as she captured three second-place finishes during the meet. She placed second in both the 400-medley and 400-freestyle relays while also finishing as the runner-up in the 200-backstroke after clocking in at 2:05.28.

Penn State will return to action next Saturday when the team opens up its home schedule with an 11 a.m. meet against Virginia Tech.
