Men's Tennis Earns Five Victories at Day One of ITA Atlantic Regionals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team picked up a total of five victories on day one of the ITA Atlantic Regionals at the University of Virginia including three singles victories. All six Penn State players that made the trip including senior Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia), junior Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia), sophomore Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) freshman Harry Seaborn (North Penn, N.Y.), sophomore Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) will play tomorrow in the main singles draw main doubles draw or both main draws tomorrow.

In singles action, Seaborn had no problem in defeating Kevon Charles of Morgan State, 6-2, 6-4. In Lee's match, he faced Richmond's Jesse Feder. The first set was close, but Lee was able to pull away with a 7-5 first set win. From there, he cruised to a 6-1 second set win to clinch the match. Welnetz was able to pull off a nice 6-2, 6-4 win over Georgetown's Charlie Caris. All three players along with Bourchier, who had a first round bye, will play in the round of 64 on Thursday.

Freshman Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) had tough setbacks in their first round matchups. Cohen was defeated by Virginia Tech's Will Beck, 6-3, 7-5, while Bader was downed by Virginia Commonwealth's Tim Johanssen, 6-2, 7-5. Bader and Cohen will participate in the consolation bracket on Thursday.

In the doubles draw, Welnetz and Seaborn teamed up and earned a huge upset win over Virginia's 9-12 seeded team in Justin Shane and Philippe Oudshoorn, 8-6. On the other doubles court for Penn State, Cohen and Bader bounced back from their singles losses and teamed up to earn a win over Georgetown's Tim Walsh and Charlie Caris, 8-4. Bourchier and Lee, who are teaming up for this tournament, earned a first round bye and will play in the round of 32 on Thursday along with Welnetz and Seaborn, and Cohen and Bader.

The Nittany Lions are expected to begin singles action around 9 a.m. on Thursday. Following the ITA Regional Championships in Charlottesville, the squad will close the fall season at the Big Ten Singles tournament from Oct. 28-Nov. 1.
