Eddie Bourchier Advances to Round of 16 at ITA Atlantic Regionals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Penn State men's tennis senior Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) continued his strong play this fall as he picked up two victories to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Regionals hosted by the University of Virginia. Additionally, Bourchier and junior Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles draw on Thursday afternoon.

In the round of 64, Bourchier, who is carrying the No. 6 seed, defeated Richmond's A.J. Nelson, 6-0, 6-3. Also in that round, sophomore Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) defeated Liberty's Tristann Stayt, 6-2, 6-3. Lee also earned a victory over his opponent, Jamie Vazquez of Virginia Commonwealth, in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (6). With their victories, Bourchier, Welnetz and Lee advanced to the round of 32, which were played later in the day.

Freshman Harry Seaborn (North Penn, N.Y.) had his day come to an end as he had a tough setback to No. 17-32 Nick Sayer of Radford, 6-3, 6-2. In the consolation draw, freshman Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) defeated Paul Gonev of St. Joe's, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) was downed by Liberty's Mandeep Yadev, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6.

In the round of 32 singles, Bourchier advanced to the round of 16 as he buried No. 17-32 Slim Tuus of Liberty, 6-3, 6-1. Bourchier was the only Penn State player to advance to the round of 16 as Bryan Welnetz lost to the No. 7 seed Corrado Tocci of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 6-3 and Lee was defeated by the No. 3 seed Luka Somen of Virginia Tech, 6-3, 6-3. Bourchier will face George Washington's Christopher Kushma in the round of 16 on Friday.

In the round of 32 doubles, Bourchier and Lee served as the No. 5 seed and defeated William & Mary's Adrian Vodislav and Ilja Orre, 8-2. With the victory, Bourchier and Lee will play in the doubles round of 16 on Friday. In other doubles action No. 9-12 Filip Rams and Kacper Rams of Temple defeated Bader and Cohen, 9-7, while Krzysztof Muzalewski and Tobias Fanselow of Old Dominion downed Welnetz and Seaborn, 8-6.

Following the ITA Regional Championships in Charlottesville, the squad will close the fall season at the Big Ten Singles tournament from Oct. 28-Nov. 1.
