EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Penn State men's tennis team completed day one of the Big Ten Indoor Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Michigan State campus. The Nittany Lions had a tough day, picking up one doubles win. Penn State and the rest of the Big Ten players will begin singles play on Saturday.
In first round doubles action, Peter Graves and Spencer Wolf of Northwestern defeated freshman Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas), 8-2, in the "A" doubles draw. Also in the "A" draw, junior Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.) were defeated by Johnny Hamui and Stephen Hoh of Illinois, 8-3. In the "B" draw, freshman Harry Seaborn (North Penn, N.Y.) and Guanhua Chen (DaLian, China) lost a tough match to Michigan State's Clark Richardson and Drew Lied, 8-1.
In consolation action, Bader and Welnetz defeated Ronnie Hulewicz and Denis Bogatov of Michigan State, 3-2 after Hylewicz and Bogatov retired. Bader and Welnetz played additional consolation matches, where they were defeated by Iowa's Nikita Zotov and Garrett Dunn (8-5) and Indiana's Bernard Langer and Santiago Grueter (8-3). Griffin and Lee lost their consolation matches to Michigan State's Austin Brooks and John Stratton (8-6) and Indiana's Langer and Grueter (8-3).
In the "B" draw consolation, Seaborn and Chen lost their consolation matches to Illinois' Connor Roth and Bruno Abdelnour (8-5) and Minnesota's Eddie Svenda and Michael Sicora (8-3).
Penn State will begin dual match play on Jan. 23 with a doubleheader matchup at home with St. Bonaventure and Lehigh. First serve is set for 10 a.m. against the Bonnies. The Nittany Lions will then travel to Princeton on Jan. 29 before returning home the next day to host Army.
