EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Penn State men's tennis team completed day two of the Big Ten Indoor Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Michigan State campus. The Nittany Lions earned four wins on Saturday, including victories by sophomore Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) and junior Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) in first round singles action.
In first round singles, Welnetz defeated Michigan's Barrett Franks, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the second round. Additionally, Lee defeated Tobias Reitz of Northwestern in the first round, 6-4, 6-1, to earn a second round berth as well. In the second round, Welnetz lost to Northwestern's Spencer Wolf, 7-5, 6-4, while Lee was defeated by Michigan's Chris Cha, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
In other first round action, Minnesota's Derek Peterson defeated freshman C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.), 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 while Wisconsin's Billy Bertha downed Guanhua Chen (PSU), 6-3, 6-1. Also, freshman Harry Seaborn (North Penn, N.Y.) lost his match to Chase Tomlins of Iowa, 6-3, 6-0. Bruno Abdelnour of Illinois beat freshman Russell Bader (Austin, Texas), 7-6 (6), 6-3 and Minnesota's Mike Sicora defeated junior Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.), 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3.
In back draw action, Bader picked up a win over Northwestern's Sidarth Balaji, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Hasyn picked up a victory over Wisconsin's Alex Teppert. Chen lost to Illinois' Brian Alden in his match, 6-2, 7-6 (4), while Seaborn lost his consolation match to Michigan's Alex Buzzi, 6-3, 6-4.
Following the ITA Regional Championships in Charlottesville, the squad will close the fall season at the Big Ten Singles tournament from Oct. 28-Nov. 1.
