UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Several NCAA automatic-qualifiers, as well as a handful of meet and facility records highlighted a bevy of outstanding results, Friday night at the Penn State National, at Ashenfelter III Indoor. The Nittany Lions enjoyed an stellar first day of competition, including a second-place finish from senior Shavon Greaves (Lakewood, N.J.) in the 60-meter dash, and fourth-place standing from sophomore Evonne Britton (El Paso, Texas) in the 60-meter hurdles. Penn State also saw several notable efforts in the field events, with sophomore Logan Caldwell (Ebensburg, Pa.) finishing fourth in the men's 35-pound weight, and junior Bianca Fung (North Babylon, N.Y.) turning in a third-place finish in the long jump.
The Penn State National results will also feature prominently in this season's NCAA rankings, with a trio of NCAA-automatic qualifying coming on Friday, including Maryland's Kiani Profit in the women's pentathlon (4109), Tennessee freshman Justin Hunter (26-1.50/7.96m), and Hampton's Reggie Dixon (6.58).
Greaves and Britton headlined the sprints, led by Greaves' second-place finish in the 60, where she clocked a season-best 7.33 to finish as the top collegian in the field. Britton held her own in a top-notch field, putting up a lifetime-best 8.22 to place fourth overall. Britton's effort also ties her with former Nittany Lion Toyin Augustus for the second-fastest performance in school history.
In the field, Fung posted a season-best 19-7.50 (5.98) to finish third in the long jump, while Caldwell was the top men's finisher in the field, placing fourth in the weight throw at 63-8.75 (19.42). Senior Joe Kovacs (Nazareth, Pa.) wasn't far behind, placing sixth overall with a toss of 62-6.75 (19.07).
The Lions also fared well in the multi-events with freshman Brittany Howell (Wyncote, Pa.) placing sixth overall with a 3326-point total in her first attempt at the pentathlon. On the men's side, junior Anya Uzoh (Laurel, Md.) is in solid standing in the heptathlon with a day-one total of 2892.
Action picks back up on Saturday morning with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m. The Nittany Lions will also celebrate their 2010 Big Ten "Triple Crown" with a banner-drop ceremony at 2:15 p.m.
