UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 27, 2011 - The Penn State women's tennis team (3-6, 0-1) lost to the No. 38 Princeton Tigers 6-1 on Saturday. Senior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) earned the lone singles point for the Nittany Lions, giving the senior her fifth win of the season.
"I'm proud of the way Denisa played and our whole team. We fought hard and there is just a few things we need to tighten up," said head coach Dawna Denny.
The Nittany Lions pushed the Tigers hard in doubles play as Penn State won at least five games in each set before falling in the doubles point. In first doubles, sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Amy Simidian (Carlstadt. N.J.) played together for the first time of the season but fell in a tough match to Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable, 8-6. Zobeideh and junior Kristen Roth (Ardmore, Pa.) were paired together after an impressive victory over VCU put were edged by Blakely Ashley and Rachel Saointz, 8-5, to give the Tigers the doubles point. Freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and junior Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) fought hard and showed determination in third doubles by coming back against Katherine Flanigan and Monia Chow to win the match, 9-8.
Play moved to singles as Sandor faced Marable in the third spot. Sandor worked her way back into the first set after an early deficit but eventually fell in the set and match, 6-4, 6-1, to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. In first singles, Januskova and Bartlett went to three sets in an up and down battle as Januskova fell, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. In fourth singles, Zobeideh battled hard forcing Chow into long rallies and a tough first set before earning the lone point for the Nittany Lions, 7-6 (5), 6-3. In second singles, Simidian fell in a hard fought battle after winning the first set to give Saiontz the match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and the Tigers the victory.
In sixth singles, Roth fell to Ashley, 6-3, 6-0, as she played in the number six spot for the first time this season. Perrotta played in fifth singles and lost a competitive match to Flanigan, 6-3, 6-2
The Nittany Lions will return to action as they host their Big Ten home opener on Fri., March 4 at 6 p.m. to take on the Illinois Illini. Penn State will then hit the road to take on Tulane on Thu., March 10. at 10 a.m. in New Orleans
