MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Penn State-Minnesota softball game on Saturday has been rescheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET. The Nittany Lions had travel problems getting to Minneapolis on Friday night, while overnight snow and chilly temperatures exacerbated the problem.
Penn State (22-16, 4-4 Big Ten) was to arrive in Minneapolis at approximately 11 p.m. Central Time, but its flight into Milwaukee was re-routed due to severe thunderstorms at George Mitchell International Airport. The Nittany Lions ended up landing in another Big Ten city instead: Madison, Wis. By the time Penn State flew into Milwaukee, the connection to Minneapolis had departed Milwaukee, stranding the Nittany Lions as there were no other flights leaving Friday night.
From there, Penn State traveled by limousine bus over six hours to Minneapolis, arriving at the hotel at 6:30 a.m. as the team drove through bands of snow, which fell throughout much of Minnesota and Wisconsin last night. Outlying areas received up to two inches of snow, while Minneapolis-St. Paul proper received nearly a slushy inch on grassy and untreated areas. All snow has melted as of 10:45 a.m. CT.
The game-time temperature is forecast to be in the low 40s with strong winds out of the Northwest in excess of 20 mph accompanied by cloudy skies. Game two of the series is slated to commence at Noon ET on Sunday at Cowles Stadium.
