Quartet of Nittany Lion Alums Aid U.S. Women to Bronze Medal in Pan Am Cup

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A quartet of Nittany Lion women's volleyball alums aided the U.S. Women's National Team to a bronze medal finish in the X Pan Am Cup in Juarez, Mexico. The U.S. women finished with an overall record of 6-2 in the tournament, including a 4-1 record in Pool B play.

Action began on July 1 with the U.S. women sweeping Peru, 25-20, 25-14, 25-14. Nicole Fawcett tallied 12 points on 11 kills and one block. Megan Hodge finished the match with seven points on six kills and one block, while Alisha Glass posted three points off two kills and one block.

The U.S. improved to 2-0 on July 2 with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 victory against Puerto Rico. Fawcett recorded 13 points on eight kills, four blocks and an ace, while Hodge has seven kills, one ace and 16 digs. Glass contributed four blocks, an ace and nine digs in the win.

On July 3 against Trinidad & Tobago, the U.S. women continued their winning ways with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-18 triumph. Christa Harmotto totaled nine points with five kills and four blocks and Fawcett tallied one block.

The U.S. women took on Costa Rica on July 4 earning a 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-8) win. Hodge posted 14 points on 13 kills and one ace, while Fawcett had five kills and three blocks for eight points. Harmotto registered three kills and Glass made six digs.

On July 5 the undefeated U.S. women took no undefeated Brazil, but Brazil came out on top with a 3-2 (28-30, 25-18, 25-19, 17-25, 15-11) victory. Hodge led the U.S. women in the match with a team-high 18 kills and Fawcett totaled 10 kills and five blocks.

After an off day on July 6, the U.S. women faced Argentina in the quarterfinals. The U.S. won, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-19) and secured a spot in the semifinals. The win earned the U.S. women a berth in the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix. Hodge finished with 10 points on nine kills and a block, Fawcett put down five kills and notched two blocks, Harmotto pounded three kills and Glass put up one block.

In the semifinals, the U.S. women suffered a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21) set back Dominican Republic on July 8. Hodge totaled an impressive 19 points on 17 kills and two blocks, while Fawcett finished the match with eight kills, two blocks and an ace for 11 points. Glass had a team-best 10 digs in the match.

The U.S. women concluded Pan Am play on July 9 in the bronze medal match against Cuba winning 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-13). Hodge scored nine points all from kills, while Glass registered 13 assists in the win.
