Woodward Tees Off at U.S. Amateur Championship

Aug. 22, 2011

ERIN HILLS, Wis. - Junior Jay Woodward (Bridgewater, W.Va.) wrapped up the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Championship with a 5-over-par score of 75 on Monday at the Blue Mound Golf and Country Club.

At the conclusion of the first round, Woodward sits tied for 177. His score of 75 consists of two birdies, seven bogeys and nine even-par holes.

After finishing third at the Bridgewater, W.Va., qualifiers in the beginning of August, Woodward sat first alternate. However, after fellow competitor Pat Carter pulled out of competition, Woodward moved up to hold a competing seed for the championship.

The championship consists of two rounds of stroke play contested on the challenging 7,760-yard, par-72 Erin Hills course, the longest course in USGA history, and the 6,622-yard, par-70 Blue Mound Golf and Country Club course. With one round of stroke play to go on Tuesday (Aug. 23), competitors will play on the opposite course that their first round was contested on. At the conclusion of Tuesday's round, the pool of golfers will be narrowed down to low 64 scorers.
