Januskova Captures Crown at Tommy and Lefebvre Ontario Open

Aug. 5, 2011

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State junior Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) took the singles title at the Tommy and Lefebvre Ontario Open in Ottawa on Monday. As the number one seed, Januskova received a bye in the opening round of 32 on Friday (July 29), but showed no signs of rust as she stormed to four straight wins for the title.

Januskova faced a familiar opponent in the championship match. She claimed the trophy with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Elianne Douglas-Miron. Both Januskova and Douglas-Miron are Ottawa natives and have faced each other many times over the years.

According to Douglas-Miron that familiarity allowed Januskova to take advantage of her own mistakes. "She was playing pretty well, and she stayed solid the whole time," Douglas-Miron said. "In the end she got the best of me."

In addition to winning the singles tournament, Januskova had an impressive showing in the doubles tournament as well. With her sister Erika as her partner, Januskova reached the doubles final but ultimately lost 0-6, 7-5, 10-7 to Laura Borza of Toronto and Francesca Mancini of Milan, Italy.

The tournament, held at the Rideau Tennis Club, features the best competition from Canada. Januskova's first and second place finishes show great promise for her upcoming junior season at Penn State. As a sophomore she was a first-team All-Big Ten selection, leading the Nittany Lions with a 14-8 record, including five victories over ranked opponents.
