The Penn State women's golf team finished the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston, with its best score in the tournament, ending in a tie for 17th place out of 22 teams. Head coach Denise St. Pierre's squad improved five strokes on the final day carding an 11-over-par 299. The Nittany Lions totaled a three-round score of 911 (308-304-299) for a 47-over-par at the 6,205-yard, par-72 Yeaman's Hall Golf Club.
Tied for the 12th-best three-round total in school history, the score of 911 helped Penn State catch Minnesota on the final day, as the Gophers fell one spot to a tie for 17th place. The Nittany Lions also stayed ahead of the 20th-place Wisconsin Badgers, the only other Big Ten team in the tournament.
Junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) finished as the top Nittany Lion in the field with a tie for 58th place and a score of 225 (77-73-75). Sophomores Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) each carded a 2-over-par on the day. Ceresko finished the tournament two strokes ahead of Vosters with a total of 226 and a tie for 63rd place, while Vosters finished in a tie for 72nd.
Freshman Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough,Ont.) finished in a tie for 92nd place with a total of 235 (77-77-79), while classmate Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) finished one stroke behind in a tie for 98th place. Competing as an individual, junior Jamie Lavin (Deerfield, Ill.) carded a three-round score of 248.
The LSU Tigers carded a tournament-best score of 277 on the final day and regained the lead to win the team championship with a combined score of 848. The Tigers also provided the individual winner, as Austin Ernst carded a score of 13-under-par 203 (67-69-67).
The Nittany Lions will be back in action again at the Cardinal Cup, hosted by Louisville, on Monday (Sept. 19). The tournament will take place in Louisville, Ky.
