The Penn State men's tennis team capped off an exciting opening weekend to the fall 2011 season at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational with three championships. Freshman Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) earned the Flight "B" singles title to cap off an impressive weekend.
In doubles action, the Nittany Lions saw two duos take the court in consolation bracket finals. Sophomore Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) and junior Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) fell to Yale's Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers in the Flight "A" championship, 9-7. In the Flight "B" doubles consolation bracket championship, seniors Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Christopher Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) won the first championship of the day for the Nittany Lions. The duo took down Yale's Daniel Faierman and Zach Krumholz, 9-8.
The Nittany Lions tallied two singles championships on the day, as well. In the Flight "A" consolation bracket championship match, Bader defeated Milo Hauk of St. John's, 6-0, 6-7, 7-6. Hanzlik then took the court against Buffalo's Damien David to decide the Flight "B" singles championship. David took the first set, 6-4, but Hanzlik rebounded in the second set, claiming a 6-2 triumph. Hanzlik then over-powered David in the third set, 6-3, to earn the title.
In Flight "C" action, Hasyn took on Tizian Bucher of Columbia to decide the consolation bracket championship. Hasyn took the first set 6-1, but fell in the second set, 7-6. Bucher then took the final set, 7-6, to take the Flight "C" consolation bracket title.
Following the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational, Penn State will return home before heading to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 20-23.
