SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - Following one day of play, the Penn State women's golf team is currently in a tie for third place at the Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Ky. The Nittany Lions posted a first-round score of 305 for a 17-over-par. The tournament, hosted by Louisville at the 6,253-yard, par-72 Cardinal Club Course, will be changed to a 36-hole event as rain kept the teams from playing 36 holes on Monday as originally scheduled.
Underclassmen led the Nittany Lions in the opening round. Sophomore Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) carded a 74, one stroke shy of tying her career-best of 73. She led the team with a tie for fifth place. Classmate Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) was one stroke behind Vosters with a 3-over-par on the day. She is currently in a tie for ninth place.
Freshmen Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) and Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) came in just behind the sophomores with a 76. The score is a new season-best for Elliott, who posted a 77 at the Cougar Classic in her first-ever tournament as a Nittany Lion. Archambault, who is competing as an individual, and Ceresko are currently in a tie for 14th place.
Junior Hanule Seo (St. Louis, Mo.) carded an 80 and is currently tied for 51st place, while classmate Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) rounded out the Nittany Lions with an opening-round score of 87.
The Nittany Lions are currently nine strokes behind first-place North Carolina State. The Wolfpack carded a 296. North Carolina State's Amanda Baker, Louisville's AnnaKarin Ljungstrom and East Carolina's Fanny Wolte are tied for first place as each golfer carded an even-par 72.
The second and final round of play will take place on Tuesday (Sept. 20) with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
