UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's golf team will host the 36th Nittany Lion Invitational beginning on Friday (Sept. 30) in State College, Pa. The 6,229-yard, par-72 Penn State Blue Course will welcome the Nittany Lions, along with 15 other teams from across the country. The 54-hole tournament will run until Sunday (Oct. 2).
"We are looking forward to playing at home," said head coach Denise St. Pierre. "It is always exciting to be on our own course and have several fans and volunteers supporting us. We feel we have only begun to see the special things this team is capable of. We have a strong field of teams but still our goal is to keep the Lion trophy at home."
Penn State claimed the 2010 tournament title with a three-round score of 901. Since its inception in 1974, the Nittany Lions have won the title 19 times, with 12 other schools winning the tournament at least once. Penn State has had 12 individuals claim the Nittany Lion Invitational title, including three of the last six individual medalists.
Junior Emily Ransone(Hilliard, Ohio) claimed the Nittany Lion Invitational title in 2009 as a freshman with a three-round score of 218. Ransone, who will be competing as an individual, holds an average of 77.8 strokes-per-round through five rounds this season.
Sophomores Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) and Christina Vosters(Bethany Beach, Del.) have led the Nittany Lions to this point. Ceresko is coming off of a tie for sixth place at the Cardinal Cup and currently holds a team-best 75.2 strokes-per-round average. Vosters' average of 76.0 ranks second on the team.
Freshmen Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) and Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.), along with junior Hanule Seo (St. Louis, Mo.), will join Ceresko and Vosters as the starters.
Each team will have five starters, with the lowest four scores counting towards the team score. The Nittany Lions will also play five individuals.
The opening round will begin with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start on Friday. The second round of play will take place on Saturday (Oct. 1), with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. The final round will begin on Sunday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
