Women's Golf to Open Spring Season at Lady Puerto Rico Classic

Feb. 10, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's golf team will head to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, to compete in the 10th annual Lady Puerto Rico Classic, starting on Sunday (Feb. 12). Hosted by Purdue, the 54-hole tournament will be played on the par-72, 6,191-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort, designed by Greg Norman.

Fifteen teams will compete in the tournament, including Big Ten schools Michigan, Nebraska, Northwestern and Purdue, that will run until Tuesday (Feb. 14).

"This is a great opportunity to compete amongst the elite in collegiate golf and see how we measure up," said head coach Denise St. Pierre. "We have been fortunate the past week and a half to actually be outside for our practices. This should give the players a little more peace of mind heading in."

The Nittany Lions will send five starters and one individual to the tournament. Three freshmen are set to compete as starters, including Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.), Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) and Erin Michel (Mason, Ohio). Archambault and Elliott each competed in all 13 rounds of the fall season for Penn State, posting 76.9 and 77.1 strokes-per-round averages, respectively.

Junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) and sophomore Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) will also make the trip. Vosters holds a 75.8 average, good for second on the team. Freshman Catherine Herrera (Houston, Texas) will compete as an individual.

"It's always challenging getting started again after a three-month break, but I do know the players have been preparing themselves both mentally and physically, and looking forward to the challenges ahead," said St. Pierre.

The tournament will consist of 18 holes of play each day, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday and Monday. Play will begin with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
