Women's Swimming Begins Big Ten Championships Action on Wednesday

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Penn State women's swimming & diving team will kick off the Big Ten Championships on Wednesday.

The Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on the campus of the University of Iowa will play host to the 2012 Championships. The championships begin Wednesday night with timed finals of the 200-yard medley relay and 800 freestyle relays at 6:30 p.m. CT. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. CT Thursday through Saturday with preliminary heats, while finals will be held at 6:30 p.m. CT nightly.

Thursday's schedule features the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and one- meter diving, while the 200 freestyle relay will be contested during the evening finals. Friday's slate presents the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and three-meter diving, with the 400 medley relay contested during the finals. Saturday features the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1,650 free- style and platform diving, while the 400 freestyle relay will be contested during the evening.

All-Session tickets are $40 for adults and $25 for youth and students. Tickets for single sessions are $5 for adults and $5 for youth and students. They can be purchased through the Iowa Hawkeyes' ticket website.

Live results for the meet are available through Iowa's website. The Big Ten Network will also broadcast the championships on tape delay.

The 20th-ranked Nittany Lions enter the conference meet after piecing together a strong regular season. Overall, Penn State went 7-3 in dual meet action, including a perfect 5-0 in the New Year.

Over the last 10 years, the Nittany Lions have been a force at the title meet. During that time, the squad has captured three titles, including back-to-back championships in 2005 and 2006. The squad has also finished in the top-three eight times over that stretch.

Last season, Penn State fourth, having several outstanding performances. Mackenzie Powers was named an All-Big Ten first teamer for her efforts.
