EASTON, Pa. - The 17th-ranked Penn State women's lacrosse team picked up its second road win of the season, defeating Lafayette (2-1), 14-10, on Saturday afternoon in Easton. With the victory, the Nittany Lions improve to 3-1 on the season.
Freshman Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) headlined the Penn State offense, netting a season-high four goals, including two on free position conversions. Sophomore Mackenzie Cyr (Westminster, Md.) totaled three points, scoring two goals while passing for one assist, while junior Katie Guy (Whitby, Ont.), sophomore Lizzy Carney (West Chester, Pa.) freshman Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) each had two goals.
Coffey got Penn State on the scoreboard just over one minute into the game but the Lions quickly found themselves trailing after Lafayette strung together back-to-back goals. Penn State responded to erase what would be its only deficit of the game, putting together a 3-0 run on the strength of goals by sophomore Evan Foulsham (Madison, N.J.), Coffey, and Cyr.
After Lafayette found net at the 19:27 mark to make the game 4-3, the Nittany Lions took control. Guy converted on a free position attempt, triggering a scoring stretch that would see PSU tally five straight unanswered goals. The Leopards would go on to score two goals in the final 5:27 of the half, making the game 9-5 in favor of the Lions at the break.
The teams would evenly trade goals through the second half's first nine-plus minutes with Coffey and Carney accounting for Penn State's scores. For Coffey, her fourth and final goal of the game was also her team-high ninth of the season.
Up 11-7, the Nittany Lions then put the game out of reach. A goal by sophomore Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) followed by scores from Carney and Cyr provided Penn State with an insurmountable 14-7 lead.
Lafayette would score three consecutive free position goals to end the game but it would prove to be too little too late.
The Nittany Lions outshot the Leopards, 38-18, but less than half (17) made it on frame.
Penn State will return home to start a two-game home stand on Sunday, March 4 when it welcomes No. 10 Virginia (2-0) to Happy Valley for a 1 p.m. contest. The ALC-ACC match-up will either be held outdoors at Penn State Lacrosse Field or indoors at Holuba Hall. The Nittany Lions have dropped six straight meetings in the series, including last year's 10-5 setback in Charlottesville.
