PINEHURST, N.C. - After two rounds at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at The Club at Pinehurst No. 6, the Penn State men's golf team sits in fifth place with scores of 296-291 (587).
In the morning round, freshman Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) came out on top for the Nittany Lions, shooting a 2-over-par 73. Finishing one stroke behind him with scores of 74 were senior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.) and sophomore Shane Stewart(Dublin, Ohio).
In their afternoon showing, the Nittany Lions bettered their team score by four strokes. Team leaders shifted during the second round as juniors Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W.Va.) and Anthony DeGol(Hollidaysburg, Pa.) posted 1-under-par and 1-over-par scores, respectively. Woodward improved seven strokes between rounds to go into the third round tied for 17th with a score of 147 (77-70). Tying with Woodward for 17th, DeGol also improved in between rounds by three strokes.
