TOWSON, Md. - At the conclusion of the second round of play at the Fireline Towson Invitational at the 6,659-yard, par-72 Prospect Bay Country Club, the Penn State men's golf team sits tied for fourth with scores of 294-293 (587).
With one round to play, the Nittany Lions sit just nine strokes back from first place Seton Hall. After the first round, the Pirates were tied for third with Penn State, but having bettered their score by 10 strokes in the second round the team leaped into the first place position with a team total of 578 (294-284).
Junior Anthony DeGol(Hollidaysburg, Pa.) came out on top again for the Nittany Lions, posting a 1-under-par 71 in the second round. With another standout performance, DeGol claimed the first place position, sitting one stroke ahead of second place Jay Mulieri from Loyola University Maryland.
Both Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W.Va.) and Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, Pa.) improved play between rounds. Woodward shot a 3-over-par 75 to place him tied for 58 with a two-round total of 152. McDonald-Smith shot a 74 to tie for 46th with a 151-stroke total. Senior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.) and sophomore Shane Stewart (Dublin, Ohio) stayed consistent, equaling their first round scores of 73 and 76, respectively. McDonagh's 146-stroke total places him tied for 13th, while Stewart ties for 58th with a total of 152.
Individual competitor Jens Talbert(Little Rock, Ark.) improved three strokes between rounds. The freshman holds a 150 two-round total and is tied for 36th.
