Men's Golf Ties for Third at Fireline Towson Invitational

TOWSON, Md. - After three days of competition at the Fireline Towson Invitational at the 6,659-yard, par-72 Prospect Bay Country Club, the Nittany Lions finished tied for third place on the 22-team field with a three-round total of 879 (294-293-292).

The Nittany Lions fell eight strokes behind the first place position, which was shared by Northern Colorado and Seton Hall. The Bears and Pirates finished with scores of 871.

"We felt going in we had a great opportunity to win," said Coach Greg Nye. "We never were able to keep any momentum we created going."

Junior Anthony DeGol(Hollisdayburg, Pa.) finished on top for the Nittany Lions. He concluded with rounds 68-71-73 (212) to secure the third place individual position.

"Anthony really played from tee to green as well as anyone in the field," said Coach Nye. "He was only a few critical up and downs from his first collegiate win."

Senior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.) and junior Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W.Va.) shot their tournament best rounds in the final round. McDonagh shot an even par 72 to bring his tournament total to 218 and finish tied for 11th. Woodward tied for 31st after carding a 1-under-par 71, which brought his total to 223 (77-75-71). Freshman Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, Pa.) posted rounds of 77-74-76 (227) to finish tied for 55th. Shane Stewart'sconsistent rounds of 76 brought him to a 228 stroke total, placing him tied for 62nd.

Individual competitor Jens Talbert(Little Rock, Ark.) finished tied for 46th with a tournament-total of 226 (77-73-76).

The Nittany Lions will be back in action next weekend, as they welcome 11 teams to the Penn State Blue Course. The 36th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate will be contested April 7-8.
