Nittany Lions Tied for Fourth After First Round

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - After one round of play at the Rutherford Intercollegiate at the 7,202-yard, par-71 Penn State Blue Course, the Nittany Lions are tied for fourth with a team total of 304.

The 14-team field experienced setbacks early Saturday morning as the frost on the course pushed the shotgun start back two hours to 10:15 a.m. The golfers played back-to-back rounds, but were unable to finish the second due to darkness.

At the completion of round one, George Mason led the field with a score of 301. Indiana University of Pennsylvania was just one stroke behind the Patriots, followed by Bowling Green who was two strokes behind. Penn State shares the fourth-place position with William & Mary and Connecticut.

The Nittany Lions were led by freshman Jens Talbert(Little Rock, Ark.) who carded a 74. Talbert is tied for sixth, just three strokes behind George Mason's Kevin Yerks who is atop the individual lead board.

Junior Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W.Va.) shot a 5-over-par 76 to tie for 12th. Senior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.) and freshman Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) are tied for 22nd with scores of 77. Rounding out the lineup, sophomore Shane Stewart(Dublin, Ohio) shot an 82 to tie for 66th.

Penn State has four golfers competing as individuals. Senior John Burke (Bay Village, Ohio) and junior Matt Porter (Cortland, N.Y.) carded 78 a piece. Senior Nick Archambault ( St-Jean-Sur-Rich, Que.) posted a 79. Junior Ernesto Marin(Miami, Fla.) shot an 81.

The second round will commence at 8:00 a.m. Sunday, followed by a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start for round three.
