UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team will travel to Ft. Meyers, Florida Sept. 30-Oct. 1 for the Cobra-PUMA Invitational. Hosted by Xavier University, the tournament will be played at the par 72, 7,390 yard Miromar Lakes course.
The Nittany Lions' golf squad will be the lone Big Ten competitor in the Cobra-PUMA Invitational, joined by fourteen other non-conference teams. These participants include Arkansas State, Bethune Cookman, Dayton, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, Jacksonville, Loyola of Maryland, Marshall, Northern Kentucky, Saint Joseph's, William and Mary, Wofford, and host school, Xavier.
In the first two tournaments of the 2012-13 men's golf season, senior Jay Woodward (Bridgeport W. Va.) finished in the top 20 of the individual rankings. He will be looking to make a repeat performance for Penn State this weekend, joined by another senior leader, Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.). Talented sophomore Jens Talbert is also coming off a top-20 performance at the Inverness Intercollegiate and will be contributing to the Nittany Lions' team score. Finalizing the lineup for the Cobra-PUMA Invitational will be the freshman pair of Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) and JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.).
This two-day event will entail 54 holes of stroke-play. The first two rounds of 36 holes will take place on day one of the Invitational, as the remaining 18 holes will take place on day two at Miromar Lakes. Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. Following each round of play, the results will be posted to GoXavier.com.
