UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Penn State Lady Lion basketball team will open their 2012-13 season with their first official practice on Tuesday, October 2 at 3:15 p.m., in the South Gym at the Bryce Jordan Center. 2012 Led by 2012 Big Ten Coach of the Year Coquese Washington, the Lady Lions are coming off of a season that brought the Big Ten regular season championship back to Happy Valley for the first time since 2003-04. Penn State returns nine letterwinners from a year ago, including four starters in Alex Bentley (Indianapolis, Ind.), Maggie Lucas (Narberth, Pa.), Mia Nickson (Ashburn, Va.) and Nikki Greene (Diboll, Texas).
Bentley and Lucas are both on the 2013 Wade Watch List for the nation's top women's basketball player after earning honorable mention All-America honors and first team All-Big Ten accolades a year ago. Bentley garnered WBCA Honorable Mention All-America honors after finishing in the Top 15 in the Big Ten in scoring (11th - 14.1), assists (4th - 4.7), steals (2nd - 3.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (7th - 1.4). She enters her senior season 15th on Penn State's career scoring chart (1,335), 12th in steals (216) and 10th in assists (455). Lucas was an Associated Press honorable mention All-American, finishing third in the Big Ten and 20th in the NCAA in scoring a season ago with a 19.5 average. She is just the third sophomore to reach the 1,000-point mark and is the 11th-fastest player in Big Ten history to accomplish the feat.
Nickson was an honorable mention All-Big Ten choice last season after battling through injuries to average 8.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. She was also selected to the NCAA Tournament Kingston All-Region team after accounting for 19 points in the Sweet Sixteen loss to Connecticut. Greene claimed third team All-Big Ten accolades after finishing fourth in the conference in rebounding (7.8), fifth in blocks (1.4) and seventh in field goal percentage (.472).
