CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Penn State men's tennis senior Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) and two Nittany Lion doubles teams reached the Round of 16 at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Charlottesville, Va. Welnetz combined with Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) and Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) paired with Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) to reach the doubles Round of 16. That round and the quarterfinals will be played on Sunday.
After receiving a first round bye on Friday, Bryan Welnetz picked up two wins on Saturday. In his second round match, Welnetz defeated Virginia Tech's Marko Lovrinovic 6-1, 6-3. He followed that up with a tough 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) win against Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez-Villa. On Sunday, Welnetz will face Virginia's Jarmere Jenkins, the top-seeded player in the regional and second ranked player in the 2012 ITA Preseason Singles Poll.
Hanzlik and Welnetz knocked off UMBC's Juan Manuel Aranzazu and Alexander Drean 8-2. On Sunday, they will matchup against VCU's Alexis Huegas and Michal Voscek.
Bader and Trkulja won their Round of 32 match 8-4 against Liberty's Shea Thomas and Egon Samaii. In the Round of 16, the duo will take on Virginia Tech's Hunter Koontz and Trpimir Kujundzic.
Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China and Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) reached the Round of 32 in doubles with their 8-6 win on Friday over Georgetown's Charlie Caris and Casey Distaso. On Saturday, they fell in a tough 9-8(3) battle to George Mason's Jimmy Davis and Scott Keaton.
Russell Bader won his first singles match of the regional with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Morgan State's Duk Young Park. In his Round of 32 match, he dropped a tough 7-6, 7-5 battle to Virginia's Justin Shane, ranked 49th in the preseason singles poll. Bader received a first round bye on Friday.
Tomas Hanzlik also reached the Round of 32 by defeating St. Joseph's Alex Veronis 6-4, 6-0. He fell in his Round of 32 match to Liberty's Siim Tuus 7-6(2), 6-4.
Junior Chris Young dropped a 6-4, 7-5 result against Virginia's Mitchell Polnet in the Round of 64. On Friday, Young won his first round match 7-5, 6-3 over George Washington's Viktor Svensson.
C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) fell 6-2, 6-3 in his Round of 64 match to George Washington's Nikita Fomin. Griffin defeated William & Mary's Ben Hoogland 7-5, 7-5 on Friday.
Freshman Roman Trkulja faced VCU's Michal Voscek in his Round of 64 match on Saturday. Trkulja fell 7-5, 6-4. On Friday, Trkulja defeated St. Joseph's Andreas Urrea 6-3, 6-2.
