Bloomington, Ind. - The Penn State men's tennis team (10-5, 0-2) faced a tough road test against No. 21 Indiana (13-3, 2-0) Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions could not overcome a strong singles performance by the Hoosiers though, falling 7-0.
Senior Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) dropped the opening doubles match, 8-5. Junior C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.) and red-shirt junior Christopher Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) then fell to Josh MacTaggart and Alastair Barnes in second doubles to clinch the first point for Indiana.
After dropping the first point of the match, Griffin fell in sixth singles to Will Kendall (6-0, 6-1) to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead. Hasyn (6-3, 6-2) and Welnetz (6-3, 6-4) then dropped back-to-back matches on courts five and four, respectively, to clinch the match for Indiana.
After the match had been decided, sophomore Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) could not overcome MacTaggart in the second singles bout, 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) then dropped his first career attempt at first singles, 1-6, 6-0, 4-6. Finally, Cohen dropped a fiercely contested contest in third singles. After falling in the first set, 6-1, the senior co-captain took the second set, 6-2. Cohen managed to push the third set to a tie-breaker, but fell 7-6 (5).
Penn State will conclude its road trip with a date against the No. 70 Purdue Boilermakers Sunday, March 25 at noon.
