No. 48 Nittany Lions Top Winthrop 4-3

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Nittany Lions defeated Winthrop 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club in Huntington, W.Va.

The win moves the Nittany Lions to 6-0 on the young season. Penn State is now the only remaining undefeated team in the Big Ten Conference this season, after Tennessee knocked off Indiana yesterday 4-3.

For the fifth time in six matches this spring the Nittany Lions won the doubles point to start the match off with a 1-0 lead. Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting quickly won their match 8-3 over Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia. The freshman tandem of Jacqueline Zuhse and Katherine Whiteaway were bested in the No. 2 spot, 8-6.

With the doubles competition tied at one, Carmen Sandor and Devan McCluskey came through to get the victory and secure the doubles point for Penn State heading into the singles matches. The duo defeated Ekin Gunaysu and Tijana Uzelac, 8-4.

Januskova and Utting quickly made their way through their singles matches and strolled to victory increasing Penn State's lead to 3-0. No. 36 Januskova, back in the No. 1 spot this week, topped No. 107 Yasmine Alkema 6-2, 6-4 while Utting bested Garcia 6-3, 6-0 in the second spot.

In the No. 5 singles match, Zuhse went down early dropping the first set before sweeping the final two sets on her way to a 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 victory. The win clinched the victory for the Nittany Lions giving them a 4-0 lead.

Winthrop got their first points on the day in the third and fourth singles matches. McCluskey and Sandor each won their first sets in those matches, but could not hold on. McCluskey was topped by Alice Garcia 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 while Sandor dropped her match to Giovanna Portioli 2-6, 6-2, 10-3. In the sixth spot Sarah Henderson lost a close match to Uzelac 7-6, 6-2 giving the Eagles their third and final point of the match.

The Nittany Lions will be back in action tomorrow when they'll take on the Marshall Thundering Herd at 11 a.m.
