UNIVERSITY PARK, PA., FEB. 4, 2013 - Penn State (8-13; 0-9 Big Ten) will seek its first conference win of the season Tuesday when the Nittany Lions take on Purdue (11-11; 4-5 Big Ten) in a 7:00 p.m. tip on the Big Ten Network. The Nittany Lions posted their first-ever Big Ten victory under second-year head coach Patrick Chambers with a 65-45 victory over Purdue in the Jordan Center last January.
It will be Dollar Dog Night for all Nittany Lion fans and the third and final Snapback Hat Night for Penn State students.
The Lions will be well rested coming into Tuesday playing their second game in 10 days and their second straight after a four-day break. The Lions had a weekend bye after falling at Iowa on Thursday.
Sophomore guard D.J. Newbill (Philadelphia, Pa.) comes into Tuesday's contest after posting his seventh 20-point game of the season, leading the Lions with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists at Iowa. Newbill and fellow guard Jermaine Marshall (Etters, Pa.) are both scoring 18.0 ppg in Penn State's last five games while posting double-digits in each game. They rank fifth and seventh, respectively, in scoring in the Big Ten and are the leagues second highest scoring tandem behind only Michigan's Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway, Jr.
Purdue brings a two-game losing skid into Tuesday after dropping a 75-60 decision at Northwestern on Saturday. The Boilermakers are led by guard Terone Johnson who is posting 12.7 ppg. Freshman center A.J. Hammons blocked five shots in the first meeting between the two teams this season, a 60-42 Purdue victory in West Lafayette. Hammons had 19 points and 13 rebounds at Northwestern on Saturday.
Penn State will hit the road on the weekend when they take on Nebraska in Lincoln in a 9:00 p.m. tip Saturday in ESPNU.

PSU will return to the road on Saturday for a late 9:00 p.m. (ET) tip at Nebraska. The Huskers claimed a 68-64 victory on Jan. 19 for their first ever win in State College. PSU is 1-2 all-time in Lincoln and the series is now tied at 3-3. NU logged a 70-58 victory last year in Lincoln and has won two of three since beginning play in the Big Ten. The Lions' only win in Lincoln came 65-59 in the 1995 NIT.
THE GAME:
Penn State will return to the Jordan Center after a weekend bye, the first of two in February, to face Purdue on Tuesday. It will be Penn State's second game in 10 days and second in a row after a four-day break. The Boilers posted a 60-42 victory in West Lafayette on Jan. 13 and own a 28-11 series lead having won the last two meetings and eight of the last nine. The Lions are 9-10 vs. Purdue in State College and posted a 65-45 victory in the Jordan Center last January for Coach Patrick Chambers' first Big Ten win. Penn State is seeking its first conference victory of the season.
NOTES TO KNOW:
• Purdue Double Dip: The Penn State Lady Lions are taking on Purdue Monday night at 7:00 p.m. in the BJC prior to the Nittany Lions contest with Purdue on Tuesday in the BJC.
• Penn State's 67 points at Iowa were 10 more than it had previously scored in a road game this season.
• Penn State's seven threes at Iowa marked its most in Big Ten play to date. It's 23 attempts marked the second most on the year and the most since taking 24 in the season opener. The Lions had seven or more threes in each of their final four non-con games while scoring 70+ points on their way to winning each game.
• Penn State has 18 blocks in the last three games (6.0 bpg) led by Jon Graham who has two in each of those games. The Lions rank fourth in Big Ten games blocking 4.1 per game.
• D.J. Newbill posted his seventh 20-point game of the season with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists at Iowa. His seven 20 point games are third most in the Big Ten.
• D.J. Newbill & Jermaine Marshall are both averaging 18.0 ppg over the last five games and also lead the team posting 5.2 and 5.0 rebounds, respectively, over the stretch. They have taken 73 of the Lions 107 free throws over the span. The next closest Lion is Sasa Borovnjak posting 6.4 ppg.
• D.J. Newbill and Jermaine Marshall have both posted double-figure scoring in each of the Lions' last five games. Four different Lions have been the team's third scorer in those games: Borovnjak (9), Travis (9), Taylor (9 & 8) and Colella (6). The Lions have had no more than two players record double-figures in the same game in the Big Ten so far.
• Newbill (7) or Marshall (9) have led the Lions in scoring in 16 of the 18 games since Tim Frazier went down with injury.
• Jermaine Marshall has led the Lions in scoring in the last three home games, posting 21.0 ppg (including a career high 29 vs. MSU).
• D.J. Newbill ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 145 free throw attempts trailing only Cody Zeller (157), Aaron White (147) and Brandon Paul (146), with no other player within 25 attempts. He has gotten to the foul line at least once in 49 of 52 career games.
• Penn State is averaging 65.4 ppg at home, eclipsing 70 five times, and 53.1 ppg on the road this season, with a high of 67 in its last outing at Iowa.
• Jermaine Marshall posted his first career double-double (29 & 10) vs. MSU. He has double-figure scoring in 15 of his last 17 games and leads the team with 36 threes and 33 steals.
• PSU has posted 15 games with double-digit offensive boards, including a season high 17 vs. Indiana on Jan. 7. PSU has won the rebounding battle in 10 of the last 15 games and is second in the Big Ten collecting 73.9% of all defensive rebounds.
• Penn State has gotten to the line an average of 21 times in the last five games and ranks third in conference games shooting 71.1% at the line, but is being outscored 22-15 at the foul line in the last five games and trails Big Ten foes 11.8 ppg to 19.0 ppg at the foul line overall, having been outscored at the foul line in every Big Ten game so far.
• Penn State has been whistled for 58 more fouls than opponents in Big Ten games.
• Newbill (5th, 15.7 ppg) and Marshall (7th, 15.0 ppg) are one of two sets of teammates to rank in the Top 10 in scoring in the Big Ten, and the 2nd highest scoring backcourt (30.7 ppg), behind Michigan's Trey Burke (2nd, 18.2) and Tim Hardaway Jr. (6th, 15.6), 33.8 ppg.
• Newbill and Marshall account for 50% of the Lions' points and 51% of steals.
SCOUTING PURDUE:
Purdue (11-11) has lost its last two games including falling 75-60 at Northwestern Saturday. The Boilers are 4-5 in the Big Ten with a road win, 65-56, at Nebraska. Freshman center A.J. Hammons blocked five shots and the Boilers held Penn State to 26% shooting and 42 points in their victory in West Lafayette. Hammons had 19 points and 13 boards at Northwestern and leads Purdue in conference games with 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds and blocking nearly four shots per game. Terone Johnson leads Purdue on the season scoring 12.7 ppg while D.J. Byrd gets 10.2 ppg and has 52 threes on 37% shooting from the arc. The Boilers are shooting 39% from the floor and scoring 61.8 ppg in Big Ten play while giving up 68.6 ppg. Opponents are outscoring PU 7.0 threes to 4.3 threes per game in the Big Ten.
TWO OF BIG TEN'S YOUNGEST COACHES COLLIDE:
Penn State head coach Patrick Chambers and Purdue Coach Matt Painter are two of the three youngest coaches in the Big Ten and among six Big Ten head basketball coaches in their 40's. Chambers (42) was born in December of 1970 about 3 1/2 months after Painter who was born in late August of that year. Chambers is the second youngest coach in the Big Ten. Illinois' John Groce (41) was born in September of 1971 and is approximately nine months younger than Chambers. Other Big Ten coaches still in their 40's are Indiana's Tom Crean (46), Nebraska's Tim Miles (46) and Ohio State's Thad Matta (45).
Penn State head football coach Bill O'Brien (43) is also in his early 40's and is the second youngest head football coach in the Big Ten. Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald (38) is the youngest. There are seven Big Ten head football coaches in their 40's or younger.
HOLDING THE MAN DOWN:
• Penn State has held the opposing teams leading scorer below their season average in each of the last six games, three of those players to single digit scoring.
• The defense was particularly strong in holding Indiana's Cody Zeller (17.2 ppg) to a career low two points and no field goals in four attempts and Big Ten Leading scorer Deshaun Thomas (20.5 ppg) to a season low 11 of 4-of-13 shooting.
NEWBILL ON POINT:
D.J. Newbill, a natural off-guard, has taken over point guard duties since the injury to Tim Frazier in the fourth game of the season. He is logging big minutes at the position playing 36.1 per game to rank second in the Big Ten. Working through growing pains at the position, He posted his best floor game with just one turnover and six assists to go with 15 points in 39 minutes vs. Ohio State Aaron Craft (1/26). He posted 10-straight double-digit scoring games after taking over, a streak snapped vs. Indiana, and has posted double-digit points in 18 of 21 games with SEVEN 20-point outings, including a career high 27 vs. Michigan State (1/16). He has led the Lions in scoring SEVEN times since Frazier's injury, posting career highs on four occasions including a 23-point, 12-rebound effort vs. Duquesne for his first double-double at Penn State and seventh career. His seven 20-point outings on the year are third most in the Big Ten.
LAST TIME OUT: IOWA 76, PENN STATE 67, Jan. 31, 2013 • Iowa City, Iowa
D.J. Newbill recorded his seventh 20-point game of the season and Penn State logged its most points in a Big Ten game on the year, but couldn't overcome 18 turnovers and a 23-point scoring deficit at the foul line. Iowa went 31-of-39 at the foul stripe led by a 10-of-11 performance from Aaron White on his way to 27 points. Newbill posted 20 points, six rebounds and four assists and Jermaine Marshall added 15 points for a PSU team that shot 39 percent and 14-of-16 from the foul line. PSU led 10-3 early by suffered a five-minute scoring drought and saw Iowa use a 14-0 run to seize a 17-10 lead. Iowa led by eight at the half. The Lions trailed by 11 when they used an 8-0 run early in the second half to close within three, but Iowa rebuilt a double-digit lead mostly at the foul line and led by as many as 15. PSU close with seven, 69-62, late but White converted a three-point play and drew a flagrant foul call on a break-away that ended the threat.
