SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Penn State men's and women's fencing team finished third in the nation at the 2013 National Championships. The Nittany Lions ended the four-day competition with 163 team points and strong performances in men's foil, men's saber, and women's epee. Princeton won the National Championship with 182 points. Notre Dame finished second with 175 points.

Penn State ended the championships with two NCAA Runner-Ups, five medalists, and eight All-Americans.

Penn State senior and 2010 National Champion Margherita Guzzi Vincenti (Milan, Italy) fenced her way to her fourth medal round appearance in women's epee. She won 18 of her 23 bouts to claim the number two seed heading into the semifinal, in which she faced Olympian and 2011 National Champion Courtney Hurley of Notre Dame. The nail-biter semi was back and forth until Hurley pulled out the 15-14 win over Guzzi Vincenti. Hurley went on to win the National Title over Princeton's Susannah Scanlan. Guzzi Vincenti finished tied for third place, and earned the fourth All-American status of her career.

Women's saber had two impressive performances from Nicole Glon (State College, Pa.) and Jessica Russo (Wayne, N.J.). Glon won 15 of her 23 bouts with a +26 indicator to claim sixth place, which is an improvement on her ninth place finish at last year's Nationals. Russo finished right behind in seventh place having defeated 15 of her 23 opponents with a +12 indicator. Both women earned an All-America status.

Freshman Clarisse Luminet (Lyon, France) capped off her first season as a Nittany Lion with a seventh place finish in women's foil at the championships. She won 15 of her 23 bouts with a +17 indicator, which earned her All-America honors. Sophomore Alina Antokhina (Moscow, Russia) also competed for Penn State, and won six bouts to place 22nd.

The Nittany Lions placed eight fencers in the top ten of their event. Notre Dame also had eight top ten fencers, while Princeton had 10.
