PSU All-Sports Museum's New Ice Hockey Exhibit to Open Oct. 11

Oct. 3, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State All-Sports Museum's new Ice Hockey Exhibit is set to formally open to the public on Friday, October 11. Located in the Museum's upstairs gallery, the exhibit traces the history of the sport at Penn State from its start in the early 1900's and the first varsity period of the 1940's to the sport's rebirth with the Icers and Lady Icers and the return to varsity play in 2012.

Featured in the exhibit are pioneers such Herb Baetz, who helped form the first Penn State team in 1909, and 1940's standouts John Dufford and Larry Lightbody. The exhibit also follows the rise of the Penn State Icers from their origins in the early 1970's to their years as a power within the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

Included in this story are the forming of the Lady Icers and the exploits of dynamic scorers Andrea Lavelle and Katie King. The exhibit concludes with the return of Penn State's varsity program, which was brought about through a generous gift by Terry and Kim Pegula in 2010.

The opening of the exhibit will be part of the Museum's overall celebration of Homecoming Weekend. Other events include the Lion Cub Zone on Saturday October 12 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Located outside the Museum, the Lion Cub Zone will feature fun and games for the whole family in the hours before the Nittany Lions' contest against Michigan. For Homecoming Weekend, the Lion Cub Zone will have a wrestling theme and will feature current Nittany Lion wrestlers.

Throughout the fall, the Museum will feature a new exhibit entitled From the Vault: Highlights from the Museum's Collection, which features rarely seen items from the Museum's holdings. Highlights from the exhibit include the Nittany Lion mascot suit worn during the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, football cleats from the 1910's, and a selection of historic Penn State footballs. The exhibit will run until December 1, 2013.

Museum hours during Homecoming Weekend will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. For more information on museum events, please call (814) 865-0044.
