COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 9 Penn State men's soccer team rattled off a season-high 27 shots, but couldn't solve the riddle that was Ohio State, falling 1-0 in double overtime to the Buckeyes on Saturday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Penn State (11-4-1, 5-1-0 Big Ten) completely owned the opening 45 minutes, earning a 14-3 edge in shots on goal and requiring Ohio State (5-6-5, 1-2-2 Big Ten) to save a Owen Griffith (Lewisburg, Pa.) heading effort off the line in 22nd minute.
Griffith again almost put Penn State in front in the 51st minute with a 20-yard rocket that forced OSU netminder Alex Ivanov into a left-sided save. Ivanov finished the evening with five stops.
Penn State needed a quick defensive save off the line itself in the 62nd minute as Ryan Ivancic's shot off an Alex Lowell corner kick was pushed aside. Goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton (Atlanta, Ga.) made two saves for the Nittany Lions.
Following an uneventful first overtime, defender Randy Falk (Tewksbury Township, N.J.) beat his man on the right wing and fired a tight-angled effort that hit the post and nearly gave Penn State its third-straight double-overtime victory.
Nevertheless, a counter attack by Danny Jensen down the right flank beat Wolverton to the far post and Ohio State came out on top.
Penn State wraps up its regular season on Wednesday night (7 p.m.) with an away match at No. 17 Akron. The Nittany Lions return to Columbus on Friday, Nov. 15 for the Big Ten Tournament semifinals as the No. 1 seed.
