Penn State Falls to Ole Miss, 79-76

NEW YORK (AP) - D.J. Newbill had 23 points for Penn State (6-2) in 79-76 loss to Ole Miss in the championship game of the Barclays Center Classic. Marshall Henderson and Jarvis Summers both scored 19 points, combining for 11 of Mississippi's last 12 in the undefeated Rebels' victory.

Henderson gave the Rebels (6-0) the lead for good at 69-68 on a drive with 5:36 to play. That was the start of the run by he and Summers.

D.J. Newbillgot Penn State within 75-74 with a vicious dunk on the break after a Rebels' turnover, but Henderson made three free throws with 1:14 left to make it a four-point lead.

Ross Travis had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Nittany Lions, while Tim Frazierhad 10 assists.

Both teams had strong efforts from 3-point range. Mississippi, which came in shooting 37.6 percent from beyond the arc, was 11 of 24 (45.8 percent), making 8 of 12 in the first half when it took a 44-39 lead. The Nittany Lions were 9 of 22 (40.9 percent) from 3-point range, over the 38.6 percent they were shooting entering the game. They made 5 of 10 3-point attempts in the first half.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Penn State moves to 6-2 on the season ... The 6-1 start was its best under head coach Patrick Chambers and overall since 2008-09 when the Nittany Lions opened 7-1.
  • The loss snapped a five-game winning streak, the longest for the program since the start of the 2008-09 campaign when the Lions won their first five games.
  • The Nittany Lions are 2-1 in away/neutral games this season.
  • Penn State battled back from a 13-point deficit in the first half to take a seven-point lead (59-52) by the 13:29 mark in the second period.
  • Donovon Jack gave the Lions their first lead of the game at the 17:27 mark of the second half with a free throw to make it 49-48. Jack finished with eight points and two blocks.
  • D.J. Newbill finished with a game-high 23 points, his second-consective game with more than 20 points. He was 10-14 from the field.
  • Ross Travis earned his second double-double of the season and seventh of his career with 17 points and a career-high tying 13 rebounds.
