UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -Redshirt sophomore forward Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.) recorded a career-high three points to help the Nittany Lions take a 4-1 second-period lead, but the Penn State men's hockey team (3-7-1) fell to No. 15 Union (8-3-2), 5-4, at Pegula Ice Arena Sunday night.
The Blaine, Minn., native, who collected five points (2g, 3a) during the weekend, extended his point-scoring streak to three games with a goal and two assists. Sophomore Luke Juha (Mississauga, Ont./1g, 1a) and freshman David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo./2a) notched multi-point games, while sophomore David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) and freshman Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) also scored.
Penn State, which finished 2-for-3 with the man advantage, netted both its power-play tallies in the first period. Union went 3-for-5 on the power play and out shot Penn State by a 43-23 margin. Nittany Lion netminder Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.) turned aside 38 shots, while Union goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos garnered the victory after making 11 saves in relief.
With 16:02 left in the opening frame, Saar netted his first goal in the Blue and White while on the power play. Juha's slap shot from the blue line hit Scheid in front of the crease, where Saar buried the opportunity into the net.
Juha doubled the Penn State advantage at 8:06. Goodwin passed to Scheid below the goal line, where he fed Juha at the point. The Mississauga, Ont., native, who entered the game leading all Big Ten blueliners in power-play goals, wristed a shot through traffic that eluded Stevens.
In the second period, Union outscored the Nittany Lions by a 3-2 margin to make it a 4-3 game. At 6:06 of the frame, Mike Vecchione scored the first of three Union power-play markers when he took a pass from Jeff Taylor and scored.
Penn State answered with pair of makers to take a 4-1 advantage. Off a Goodwin faceoff win, Scheid sent a wrister from the high slot that eluded Union starting netminder Colin Stevens.
Glen gave the Nittany Lions a three-goal lead with 8:17 left in the frame. After Glen dumped the puck behind the Union net, he and a Union defenseman both hit the puck at the same time before it ricocheted off a defenseman and past Stevens. Sophomore forward Kenny Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) also collected an assist on the play.
Union responded with four straights goals, including a pair of markers in both the second and third periods, to take the lead. Dutchman defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere netted a pair of power-play tallies at 12:48 and 15:54 of the second period before Matt Hatch tied the game at 6:49 of the third frame.
With three seconds remaining, Daniel Ciampini maneuvered behind the Nittany Lion defense and slid the puck past McAdam for the game-winner.
The Nittany Lions will return to action next weekend when they open Big Ten play at No. 12/13 Wisconsin Dec. 6-7. Opening faceoff Friday (Dec. 6) is set for 8 p.m. ET, while Saturday's puck drop will take place at 9 p.m. ET.
