UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's tennis head coach Dawna Denny-Wine announced her resignation today.
Penn State Director of Athletics Dave Joyner announced that Chris Cagle, an assistant coach with the Nittany Lion men's tennis team, will serve as the interim coach for the women's tennis team during the 2014 campaign.
"I am very appreciative of Dawna's contributions to the women's tennis program and Penn State," said Joyner. "We thank Dawna for her service to Penn State and wish her all the best."
Denny-Wine was in her seventh season at the helm of the women's tennis team. She came into this season with a 50-86 record at Penn State and a 115-162 career mark in 12 seasons as a head coach. She previously was the head coach at North Texas.
"I would like to thank the amazing student-athletes whom I had the honor to work with during my time at Penn State," said Denny-Wine. "Great things are in store for each member of this team. I am excited for their futures and we will follow and support them every step of the way. I would also like to thank our strength and conditioning, training and tennis coaching staffs and our staff assistant. My family and I are excited about the next step in our lives."

Cagle was in his third season as a Penn State assistant men's tennis coach under head coach Jeff Zinn. Cagle previously had served as a volunteer assistant coach with Zinn for two years at Wake Forest. A native of Greensboro, N.C., Cagle played tennis at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and was the program's first two-time team captain.
Prior to collegiate coaching, Cagle worked with elite junior players that competed in all four junior Grand Slam tournaments. In addition, Cagle has worked and trained female tennis players that have gone on to win NCAA singles and doubles championships, NCAA team championships and a NCAA team championship MVP award.
Joyner said a national search will be conducted in 2014 to find the next leader for the women's tennis program.
Penn State recently completed the fall tournament season and begins the spring campaign on Jan. 18 when it hosts Cleveland State and Bucknell at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center.
