UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Nine members of the Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team competed both attached and unattached at the Timber Wolve Open at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, N.Y., late Saturday evening. Six of the competing Lions grabbed titles at the open tournament.
Sophomore Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.) led the charge, going 3-0 at 133 with a pin and a major to win the title. He was named Outstanding Wrestler for his efforts. Junior Nate Morgan (McCook, Neb.) won the 141-pound crown, beating teammate Mike Waters (Advance, N.C.) in the finals. Morgan took first with a 3-0 mark while Waters was the runner-up with a 3-1 record, including two pins. Freshman Kade Moss (South Jordan, Utah) also went 1-1 with a pin at 141.
Junior Seth Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) rolled to the 157-pound title with a 4-0 record including a major. Teammate Caleb Livingston (Drexel Hill, Pa.) also competed at 157. Sophomore Rex Lutz (Easton, Pa.) posted a 3-0 mark with a pin plus a win over a non-collegiate athlete in the finals, winning the 174 pound crown. Sophomore Josh Rogers (Pottstown, Pa.) posted a 3-0 record with two pins at 197 to win his weight class while junior Jon Gingrich (Wingate, Pa.) rolled to a 5-0 mark with four pins to with the 285 title.
Penn State returns to action for an historic dual meet against No. 23 Pitt on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. The intrastate match-up will take place in a sold out Bryce Jordan Center with 15,000-plus fans filling the vaunted venue for the meeting.
