Hernandez Leads Men's Gymnastics at Winter Cup Finals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior Craig Hernandez (Libertyville, Ill.) led the Penn State men's gymnastics team with an individual title on the pommel horse in the finals of the 2014 Winter Cup Challenge at the Riviera Hotel. Sophomore Trevor Howard (Columbus, Ohio) also competed alongside Hernandez, finishing among the top-20 in four different events.

Howard finished 17th overall in the all-around after posting a total score of 80.900 in the finals. He opened the competition with a 15th-place finish in the floor exercise, registering a score of 14.500. His all-around performance was far from over as he notched three more top-20 finishes.

On the rings, Howard improved upon his day one score by 1.150 points, from 13.950 to 15.050 for an 11th-place finish in the event. He also finished 18th on both the vault and the parallel bars with scores of 14.350 and 13.150, respectively.

Howard rounded out his performance in the finals with a 22nd-place finish on the high bar (13.650) and a 28th-place finish on the pommel horse (11.000).

Hernandez highlighted the second day of competition with an individual title on the pommel horse, posting a 14.350 to become the Winter Cup Challenge champion on the apparatus.

Competing on two more events, Hernandez secured a 19th-place finish in the floor exercise, improving his day two score to 14.350 for a combined total score of 28.700. On the rings he finished tied for 31st swinging to a score of 12.500.

Next up, Howard and Hernandez will join the rest of the seventh-ranked Penn State men's gymnastics team for their final home meet of the season. The Nittany Lions will square off against Big Ten foe Minnesota Saturday, March 1 on senior night at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall.

Both season and single meet tickets are available for purchase. Season ticket packages costs $12 for adults and $8 for youth, while single meet tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth. Single meet tickets are available for purchase in advance at the Bryce Jordan Center and at the Rec Hall ticket window on the day of the meet.
