UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Eight members of the Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team took part in the Edinboro Open Saturday at Edinboro University. Four Nittany Lions tallied four wins, with three of those Penn Staters earning places.
With the event rolling late into Saturday night, many bouts, particularly in consolation action, were not contested. All Nittany Lions were wrestling unattached.
Senior James English (York, Pa.) went 4-1 at 149 and advanced all the way to the finals. Taking second place, English also posted two tech falls. He dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to red-shirting Ohio State Buckeye Hunter Stieber in the finals. Freshman Cody Law (Windber, Pa.) went 4-0 at 157 and took fourth. He also had a major decision. Freshman Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.) was 4-1 at 184 and took fourth as well. McCutcheon notched a tech fall and a pin (in 1:07) along the way.
Freshman Garrett Hammond (Chambersburg, Pa.) was 4-0 with a major and two tech falls at 165. Freshman Caleb Livingston (Drexel Hill, Pa.) went 2-1 at 157 with a pin and sophomore Rex Lutz (Easton, Pa.) was 1-2 at 174. Sophomores Josh Rogers (Pottstown, Pa.) and Dylan Dailey (Danville, Pa.) each competed at 197.
Head coach Cael Sanderson's squad is in Minnesota today and will take on the Golden Gophers at 2 p.m., 1 p.m. Central, live on the Big Ten Network. Penn State returns home next weekend when it will host Oklahoma State in already sold-out Rec Hall next Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m.
