BLACKSBURG, Va.; March 11, 2014 - After a solid opening day at the NCAA Diving Regionals at Virginia Tech, the Nittany Lion men's and women's divers were back in action for day two of the competition. The men's event of the day was the one-meter event and the women's was the three-meter event.
T.J. Schenkel (Richboro, Pa.) and Lucas Kachurick (McKeesport, Pa.) took to the springboard for the Blue and White in the men's one-meter competition on Tuesday. Schenkel posted a score of 258.70 for 26th place in the preliminary round, eight spots shy of reaching the final. Kachurick recorded a score of 223.10 over his six dives in the prelims for 38th place.
On the women's side, Mackenzie Cornell (Germantown, Md.), Megan Springsteen (Oswego, N.Y.) and Meredith Harbison (Butler, Pa.) competed in the three-meter event in day two of the three-day NCAA Regionals. Cornell paced the squad with a score of 223.70 en route to a 28th place finish in the prelims.
Springsteen turned in a mark of 199.30 in her six dives in the preliminary round, earning 40th place in the event. The third and final Nittany Lion finisher in the competition was Harbison, who posted a score of 187.50 to place 43rd in the three-meter dive.
The top-two finishers in each event earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships later this month. The automatic qualifying marks on Tuesday went to Michael Mosca of Harvard and Kyle Butts of Virginia Tech on the men's side while Lillian MacRae of Yale and Ashley Buchter of Virginia Tech earned the spots in the women's competition.
Tomorrow marks the third and final day of the NCAA Regionals in Blacksburg, Va. with the platform diving event for both the men and women. The preliminary rounds are scheduled to start at noon, with the finals slated to begin 15 minutes after the finish of the prelims.
