UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After anchoring the Penn State men's volleyball (13- 3, 6-1) defense during a 1-1 weekend on the road, redshirt sophomore Matt Seifert has earned his first conference weekly award of the season, being selected as the EIVA Defensive Player of the Week.
Seifert closed out the weekend with 11 total blocks, averaging a team-high 1.22 per frame. He opened the weekend with a squad-best five blocks in a close 3-2 loss at Princeton. Seifert returned the next night to guide the Nittany Lions to a 3-1 win at George Mason, matching a season high mark with six total blocks, while also tallying a career-high six service aces.
Averaging 0.75 blocks per set, Seifert's 41 total blocks currently ranks second on the team. He's also recorded at least one block in every single match this year, including 10 multi-block performances.
This weekend, Seifert and the rest of the Penn State men's volleyball team will continue its seven-match road test, traveling to Ohio State for a non-conference Big Ten tilt set for Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m. Penn State will briefly return home before heading to the west coast the following weekend to take on Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State Friday, March 14 - Saturday, March 15.
