UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State (5-16, 1-8 Big Ten) fell to No. 41 Indiana (17-7, 5-4 Big Ten) in front of their largest crowd of the season on Senior Day, 6-1. Dasha Sapogova (Minsk, Belarus) earned the Nittany Lions point in come-from-behind fashion winning the final two sets on the way to victory.
Indiana earned the first win in doubles after Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek won the No. 1 match's final five games to take the set and match, 8-3. The Hoosiers clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles where Kayla Fujimoto and Alicia Kauss took the final four games against Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) to close out the match.
At No. 2 doubles Sophie Garre and Shannon Murdy topped Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) 8-2, to finish the doubles competition.
After dropping the first set, Whiteaway retired from play in the first game of the second set allowing Indiana's Paula Gutierrez to get the win and put Indiana up two points early on in singles.
In the No. 6 singles match Lisa Petruzillo (Muttontown, N.Y.) won the first two games of her career but was unable to knock off Gabrielle Rubenstein, falling 6-1, 6-1. Shukow was unable to hold off Kauss at No. 4 singles as the Hoosier clinched the win for the team with her 6-2, 6-0 victory.
In her final singles match in Happy Valley, Sandor put up a fight taking two late games in the second set at No. 3 singles to pull within two but Chupa spoiled it taking the match 6-2, 6-3 to put Indiana up 5-0.
After dropping the first set 6-1, Sapogova came back from a 5-0 deficit in the second set winning the final seven games to force a third set superbreaker. In the final set she knocked off Klyczek 10-7 to give the Nittany Lions their first point of the match.
Sophie Garre topped Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) in a close match at the second singles spot to give Indiana a 6-1 victory. Blik and Garre exchanged leads in both sets but the Hoosiers' No. 2 was able to capture the win, 7-6, 6-4.
Penn State will head back out on the road next weekend to finish off their regular season. They will take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the NU Varsity Courts at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, April 14. The Nittany Lions will conclude their regular season at 11 a.m. ET against Iowa on Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex on the Klotz Outdoor Tennis Courts.
