FAIRBANKS, Alaska --

The Nittany Lion men's hockey team couldn't hold on to a pair of two-goal leads in a 3-3 tie with Alaska Anchorage at the Brice Alaska Goal Rush Friday night at the Carlson Center. Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) tallied PSU's third goal in a return to his native state.

The first period belonged to the Nittany Lions who owned a 14-4 margin in shots and opened the contest with two goals in the first 8:47. Just 3:30 into the game, Patrick Koudys (Smithville, Ontario) saved a shot off the goal line on a UAA 3-on-1 before Penn State took control on the offensive end.

On a defensive breakout, Curtis Loik (North Vancouver, British Columbia) rushed down the left boards, chipped into the zone off Scott Conway (Basingstoke, England) and went in on net unchecked and ripped a close-ranged, tight-angled shot past UAA's Michael Matyas for the 1-0 lead 4:33 into the game. The goal was Loik's first of the year and Conway's first collegiate point.

PSU kept the pressure on the Seawolves, earning a power play and capitalizing on the extra-man opportunity when Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alberta) slid a shot through traffic for his first goal of the season with 11:13 remaining in the first period. Richard's goal was assisted by Nate Jensen (Shorewood, Minn.) and Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.).

Alaska Anchorage came out with a renewed sense of purpose in the second period, earning two power plays in the first 11 minutes, which garnered a 6-3 advantage in shots. One mad scramble during the second power play opportunity had Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) on his back, making a save and thwarting the Seawolves.

The Nittany Lions were able to regain control on the game at the faceoff dot, winning 11 of the final 13 draws in the period. Holstrom drove through traffic and was leveled by an elbow from UAA's Hayden Trupp with 4:11 remaining in the period.

PSU would be the beneficiary of the power play as Bailey ripped a shot from the left point for a 3-1 lead with 2:07 remaining in the frame. Jensen added his second helper of the night on Bailey's shot, while Holstrom earned his second assist of the night.

Conway would take a slashing penalty late in the third period as the Seawolves earned their second power-play goal of the night through Blake Leask, whose effort was deflected in front, with 5:41 left in the third.

The Seawolves pulled Matyas and grabbed the extra-attacker goal as Blake Leask's shot through traffic hit a Nittany Lion stick and made its way in, forcing overtime.

In overtime, the Nittany Lions lost David Thompson (Glen Mills, Pa.) to a laceration to his midsection during a scramble in front of his own net. He was treated by medical staff, carted off by stretcher and taken to a local hospital, acknowledging the crowd before departing the ice. He required a few stitches and was in good spirits as of press time.
